They are pen shells.I've found them in Maryland and South Carolina on the beach.
Thanks,driving myself nuts over them.
My elderly neighbor told me someone he knows who hunts up here uses these shells to hold gunpowder,glue them together & pour the powder down them.That seems like an awful lot of trouble to carry around these huge things when hunting.phyllis
