Sat.`s critters/ the misadventures of Hope the hamster

Linking up with Eileen herehttp://viewingnaturewitheileen.blogspot.com/
Travelling the backroads in Aug.with my friend,Cathleen, & my granddaughter,Savannah, we discovered many items to be thrown away from yard sales we were too late to go to, of course Cathleen said Savannah must have a hamster cage sitting out for trash. After church the next day we were at Petsmart getting the hamster she named Hope.
Well, there was a reason it was sitting out to be trashed, it fell apart while we were cleaning it & we couldn`t figure out how to put it back together. I had an extra cage in the shed, so she went in it.
She was fine & had a little ball she could roll around in too, it was scotch taped closed though...things were going so well her mom allowed her to take it home. Mon.after school I get this phone call from Savannah that Hope had escaped from the cage. She was crying so hard I could barely tell what she was saying. They live in a townhouse with 3 floors. I got her calmed down & told her she was most likely in her room somewhere, well they did find her under her bed. They put her back in the cage & she promptly escaped right before their eyes, so that night she rolled in her ball all around Savannah`s room stressing her out so Savannah couldn`t sleep.
I recieved her back the next day,so I took the measurements & went to walmart & bought a tote to set the cage down inside. It was tight so I knew she couldn`t get out but she still had her wheel hooked to the cage to play on.
Well, don`t you know I went to check on the creature later, & she was wedged so tight in the bars of the cage & against that tote where she had been escaping from that I thought she was dead. I carefully took her out, she was not dead but I am glad that I checked on her when I did.The bars were embeded spots in her skin.Slowly over the next several days the bar marks went away & I am happy to report she is fine & healthy .She lives in the tote now with a new stand up wheel to run on which I listen to at night when I can`t sleep,squeek...squeek...

Hamsters are amazing escape artists. Mine figured out if he jammed his food bowl under his wheel, he could climb up the wheel w/o it spinning and reach the top of the cage. Which had a plastic top that fit well with air slats so the stupid thing would hang from the slats before falling and repeating the whole process. It was hilarious. He never got out but he sure tried.

What a splendid little animal and I dont just mean the hamster!

We call my son "Ham" - which sometimes gets extended to Hamster, so I have a soft spot for them!
