World Bird Wed.Pileated Woodpecker dryocopus pileatus

Today I`m reposting 1 of the pictures I took of the pileated woodpecker. To see the rest rather blurry ones, scroll down below the cat show.
We have left many dead trees stand in our forest,& the woodpeckers have taken advantage of them, cleaning the insects out. When we first moved here, neighbors were angry, saying the pileateds were killing their trees. After many discussions, they have finally gotten it through their heads that their trees are already diseased, that is why the woodpeckers are drumming into them.
This appears to be a male woodpecker,he has a redcrown, crest,&malar mark.
Go over to the springman`s blog to check out all the beautiful birds there & link yourself to them,it`s alot of fun!

Great photo! I have been trying for years to get a good photo of a Pileated Woodpecker.. They are such an infrequent visitor to my property and usually travel alone, but they are such a beautiful bird.-Congratulations on a great shot!

I'm glad the education of your neighbors is coming along. It takes a lot of patients.
The Pileated is tough to find around here. I've seen only two in the last six years! Thank you for sharing. ;-)WBW

I really love the Pileated woodpeckers and can now even recognize their sound--I think they are just amazing and are welcome in my yard anytime, I love seeing them!! Your pictures are great, they can be a bit elusive, can't they?

I hope you've had a good day!!

Great picture of this beautiful guy! We had one rat atatting in our front yard this morning, but no luck with picture -- he was camera shy.

Thanks for sharing yours.
