Ramblings

We have to pasture the goats somewhere else this summer. We are thinking of using their fenced area at the barn now as our veg.garden, planting a grain crop between rows so we can place them back there in the winter. My DH thinks of getting a portable pen we can take up & move every week or so.I don`t know how that would work, maybe if we had 2 portable pens. But where the pine came down is alot of brush & leaning trees & just an unhealthy growth area.I was going to put them in there, but the deer travel through there,so would I be openning up a slew of health problems for them? they would love it,I`m sure, scrambling over the dead logs.I would extend it out to the apple trees & the green grass there as well.We never get any produce from the apple trees,& the goats would love them.Where they are at now needs to be let go for the summer, anyhow.
Pictures of Hunter & the dogs.He is coming along in growing his hair back.Just a sweet dog.He has gotten bitten by the macaws,& Hunter has bit me 4 different times as I try to swipe him away from their intending bites.Guess he will have to learn on his own ,the hard way.

It's nice to see a picture of the pups again.

Do the deer bother the sheep?

The deer pose a problem because they can give the goats a menigital worm that affects their central nervous system. The goats either ingest deer droppings containing a slug that feasted on the deer droppings or the goats ingest a slug who has been dining on deer feces. But I believe the deer only pass through there, they bed down & their droppings I see are on down in the woods. It would be nice to have the goats brush clean that area.phylliso

You're planning ahead so I'm sure you'll work it out by summertime. You don't want a repeat of what you went through with that problem last summer (or was it in 2007 - I lose track!), with the menigital worm. But if you have it fenced it, the deer won't go in there, right?

Phyllis,

I saw your picture with your Collie on another blog and had to look you up. We have two things in common, so far. I have a Collie and I lived in Pa. up until 1999, when we moved to Delaware. I read your older post about you having to have your faithful friend put down, mine will turn eleven in March and I dread what will come all to soon. Already he is getting lumps, which the Vet says are cysts, but I fear the worst. Before I got Sergei(that's his name) I had three other Collies all at once, a Tri(Shilo),Sable(Seth) and Blue Merel(Shadow), I lost them all in a little over a year's time, so I know and have lived your sorrow. My girlfriend was a breeder, she lived in Hegins Valley, but had to give it up because of a divorce. I loved spending time with her and her dogs. I'll have to look it up, but I believe some of my Collie's have come from the same blood line as yours. Stop by my blog when you get the chance, I have pictures of them on there and my dog Seth looked very much like the dog your holding in the picture.

Nice to meet you.

Thank-you for stopping by,D,& yes, your collie looks just like my Max.Max started with a cyst on his tail. The vet had to take part of his beautiful tail off when he was 8.She said it was not cancer, but now I believe it was.I am still so heartbroken over him,I feel as if a piece of myself is gone with him, that I will never recover the loss of him.
Thank-you for stopping over,I was hungry for collies & your blog eased my pain for awhile, blessings, phylliso
